Wow. New York IS the city that never sleeps. And neither did I (nearly) for the 10 days I was in the capital of publishing. Met with editors in their lairs, er, I mean offices. Met them on the show floor of Book Expo America. Learned about new trends and perennial favorites for adult genre fiction, middle grade, and young adult books. Discovered that each major publisher either has or will soon launch eOriginal imprints. Found the Amazon booth indistinguishable from the Big Six with book signings and tons of free galleys and books from their imprints. The energy level at BEA was through the roof positive. It seems that there is chaos and massive change in the industry, for sure, but also great hope for expansion and experimentation.
Now if I can only get my brain back from whatever part of my body it is hiding in, I’ll be rockin’ the West Coast again. This coming week: The BookPassage Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference. It’s a fantastic little conference with tons of opportunities to interact with great authors, editors and agents. Then the following weekend I’ll be in Austin, Texas for the Writers League of Texas Agents Conference. Yee haw redux.
